All new parents experience change when bringing a baby into the world. Schedule changes, habit changes, diaper changes – typically all to accommodate the little one. As time passes, both parents and baby adjust to this new life, taking on other challenges as they arise. One of those many parents have encountered, and you may have with your own child.
Colic in infants can be both concerning and frustrating. Majority of the time, baby cries for no apparent reason, even with a clean diaper and full belly. To diagnose a colicky baby, parents and doctors refer to the “Rule of 3:” crying for 3 or more hours a day, at least 3 days a week for 3 or more weeks. There has not been a clear conclusion as to why this uncontrollable crying occurs, especially after all other outlying health concerns have been dismissed. Sometimes a baby fusses when experiencing an unknown food sensitivity or allergy, over feeding or under feeding, and even simple external stressors.
Gentle spinal adjustments can release the interference with the digestive tract and allow it to function normally. Though colic does not cause short or long-term medical issues for baby, it can be extremely stressful for parents. No individual wants to sit and wonder why their child is crying and why they just can’t make it stop. Soothing techniques are usually suggested, such as swaddling and food or diet changes. Alternative treatments, like chiropractic, can also have an impact when it comes to crying and sleep patterns. Often times a Chiropractor will find that the baby has restricted motion of the pelvis, which causes restriction in bowel and gas movements. This is easily and gently corrected with a light, specific pressure. Dr. Christie states, “I have had several children present with colic issues, and parents at their wits end. After correcting the problem, parents cannot believe how different their child acts with eating, sleeping, and digestion!”
The interference can occur in infants with the cramped positioning in mom’s belly, during a difficult birth, breech babies, or restricted motion during pregnancy. If you know any parents experiencing the difficulty of a colicky baby, suggest they see a Chiropractor. This can really change the life of both the infant and the sanity of the parents!
